The Victorian Gypsy Cob Spectacular

In 2021, the All Breeds Show Society partnered with the Australasian Gypsy Horse Society to bring a brand-new event to the Victorian show calendar. The Victorian Gypsy Cob Spectacular, was Australia’s first 2 day, dedicated, feature show for pure and part bred registered Gypsy Cobs. The program was jammed packed full of classes including young stock and senior led, coloured classes, versatility course, fancy dress, long reining and an extensive ridden section, and the turn out was amazing. You would be hard-pressed to find a better lineup of Gypsy Horse any where in the country.

Since it’s debut, the Gypsy Cob community have generously the event, ensuring that pure and part bred Gypsy Cob owners have quality events to attend with their beloved horses. This allows us showcase such a wonderful breed and provides a great opportunity for people to come together with liked-minded people.

To ensure the horses in attendance are assessed by suitably qualified judges, the ABSS has made a significant investment in obtaining experts from overseas for recent events. This provides an international voice to breeders and owners, and offers a level of expertise not otherwise possible.

Event Dates

Despite the shaky start we suffered due to COVID-19 lockdowns in our debut year, the 2021 event was such a success that we ran for the second time on the 26th and 27th February, 2022. This show will now have a permanent place in the ABSS calendar and we have booked the next Gypsy Cob Spectacular for the 1st and 2nd March 2025, at the Elmore Equestrian Park. We are aim to make each year bigger and better than the last, and competitors can expect loads of prizes and special features.

Show Features

After each year’s show we undertake extensive consultation with the Gypsy Cob and Show Community to ensure that we are moving with the times and showcasing the breed in a manor befitting them. Classes are removed or added from the program so that we are always moving forward in a positive manner.

In 2025 we will be adding Fashions on the Field to the program, giving everyone a chance to strut their stuff, embrace period costumes or where their fanciest garb. We will be hosting ridden classes for those on lead, right through to those riding at an Open level and our versatility course will come back for another challenging year.

Showcasing the Gypsy Cob versatility

Gypsy Cobs and their derivatives are a very trainable and personable breed that make great horses for families and for those wanting to do a range of equine activities. At the Gypsy Cob Spectacular we highlight this versatility in our obstacle course. Spanning across the led, ridden and long reining classes, our obstacles are a very popular activity for both competitors and spectators.

Long Reining

For those commencing a harness career or just wanting to further their horse’s skill set, our long reining sections are loads of fun. While the more educated and experienced Cobs may be shown in collars and formal harness, competitors are also welcome to use training rollers, standard bridles and suitable long reins. Don’t let lack of experience slow you down! Long reining is a great foundation for a career under saddle or for those who prefer not to ride.
